6/22/25 The word "milk" has ancient roots, tracing back to the Proto-Indo-European root *melg- meaning "to wipe, to rub off," and specifically referring to the hand motion involved in milking an animal, according to Online Etymology Dictionary. This root evolved into Proto-Germanic *meluk-, and then into various Germanic languages like Old English "meoluc" and Old Norse "mjolk". Ultimately, it arrived in Middle English as "milk".
