  • What do you define as an outsider? Is that a term you use for people that disagree with you?
  • In my culture, outsiders are viewed with suspicion and distrust. Hard lessons learned over the years. 5/5/25 feliz cinco de mayo

The thing is, not all outsiders are not untrustworthy and suspicious. There are some friendly outsiders as well as those who can be dangerous. It’s all about people awareness.

Sure, agreed. However in times past, if an outsider didn't speak our language, they were usually considered as possible trouble. That has changed a little over the centuries of forced coexistence with outsiders, but not a whole lot. Although the language thing isn't really relevant anymore. Since the boarding school era, very few of us can speak our old language now.
    • Shadow Of The Mind
I know what you mean. It wouldn’t make sense to consider them as trouble just because of a different language they speak but I hear what you’re saying.
    • dalcocono
Up until the mid 20th century, when our languages began to be destroyed, people speaking another language were inevitably invaders, bringing war and worse to us. They were always trouble.
    • Shadow Of The Mind
You know your history. I wouldn’t have known that. I’m sure things have changed since then.
    • dalcocono
Yes, they have. The last wave of invaders destroyed our language and culture, by taking the children away to be raised up in schools that were far away, forbid our religious ceremonies until 1968 and cheated us out of most of our ancestral lands. Things have changed a bit, but most of us across the country are still a bit suspicious of outsiders.
    • Shadow Of The Mind
There would be no need to be suspicious of me as I am an outsider because I like to show respect for different cultures. That sounds terrible that children had been taken to be raised in schools far away.

When I was a kid, every ndn I ever knew was either a survivor of Riverside ndn school or stewart acadamy ndn school. I was the first in my family to go to public school and not be sent away to the boarding school. We are 21st century people now too. Many of our tribes own casinos where we welcome people from all over the world.
    • Shadow Of The Mind
That’s nice to know people from all over the world are welcome to the tribe’s casinos.
