  • I had a neighbour who had a mastiff, we had shared access, she was stand offish of her new environment at first. I sat on my doorstep, let her sniff my face and head, after that we got on really well, she was a real joy to come home to, she would have her two paws over the gate waiting for me, we'd mess about together, she'd hide from her owner behind the pots in my garden, with her back end hanging out, she thought if she couldn’t see him, then he couldn't see her. She was hilarious, a wonderful, joyful dog, and protective of me if any strangers came through the gate. She was a butt sniffer though, I felt like a ball on the end of a seals nose everytime I came out and was locking my front door! One of a kind, sadly she died of cancer, it was the silent type that affects larger breeds, it's already too far gone by the time they get symptoms, sorely missed I'd have one if I was strong enough to walk him/her.
  • They are not aggressive if proper training and socialization is done early in their years to prevent aggression from developing. Other than that, Mastiffs are very protective dogs, particularly Tibetan Mastiffs. In history, they have been historically used to scare away wolves, leopards and tigers.
