Dalcocono has down an outstanding job of answering, so i'll just add, Shut down, due to a triggering topic, or emotion. Some people cannot relate on an emotional level, because they are out of touch with their own, or feel very little themselves, they are more likely to favour mental understanding. For them it's like the other person is speaking a different language.
